Scott, Ian DeVol. “Factors Influencing the Academic Performance of African American Student-Athletes in Historically Black Colleges and Universities.” Sports Journal, 03 Aug. 2017, p.1. EBSCOhost
My first source, “Factors Influencing the Academic Performance of African American Student-Athletes in Historically Black Colleges and Universities” by Scott, Ian DeVol focuses in on student-athlete academic performance at what DeVol classified as historically black colleges and universities. This relates to my topic because it researches how being a part of an athletic team can affect the academic performance of the students. The research behind the source is shown throughout the work. DeVol pulls information from many sources which he cites.
This source also mentions other factors that affect academic performance for student athletes other than the sport itself. It touches on subjects such as living off-campus and other extracurricular activities. However, for my research, I will mainly be focused on the sports impact. DeVol included research of others on student-athletes academic performances, “Student-athletes as a whole graduate at higher rates than students of the general population…(Bowen & Levin 2003).” Devol also includes statistics from sources such as the NCAA, The National Collegiate Athletic Association. This is a credible source as it is the association which all college athletic programs are run under.
Currently, this is my only source but I believe that this source will be different from other sources as this focuses mainly on historically black colleges and universities.
